Got Pigs? Got Goats?

On his January 2010 trip to Nepal, Marian was accompanied by Jason Corbin, a friend who grew up on farms, and is trained in animal science and husbandry. Jason looked at the buffaloes that had been purchased in several villages and figured that they were not getting enough food to lactate properly. Thus the yields were low, and decreasing, while an increasing number of people were finding it harder to forage for the vegetation needed to feed the cows. The price of water buffaloes has also increased substantially in the past couple of years. As a result of these factors, we have switched to purchasing goats and pigs for the villagers in Nepal. We can purchase more animals with the donations we have received and the payback appears better than for the cows.
